Basilian Fathers Museum

Basilian Fathers Museum

The Basilian Museum is a world-class facility. Since arriving from Ukraine in 1902, the Basilian Fathers have taken a special interest in the rich Ukrainian patrimony brought to Canada by Ukrainian settlers since 1891. An extensive collection of artifacts have been accumulated and are now displayed in a modern museum in the heart of early Ukrainian Canadian settlement, Mundare.

To commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the Basilian Fathers' arrival in Canada, a permanent exhibit - Service in the Vineyard of the Lord - was prepared. It celebrates the lives of dedicated men and women who served the Lord by serving the Ukrainian people in Canada. It tells the stories of the monks, priests, bishops and nuns who devoted their lives to this service. The exhibit outlines the history of the Basilian Order and traces the development of the Ukrainian Catholic Church in Canada from 1902 to the present time. This unique collection of artifacts attracts over 5,000 visitors annually.
The Basilian Fathers Museum is open year round Monday - Friday from 10:00am - 4:00pm. During July & August it is open on Saturdays and Sundays from 1:00pm - 5:00pm.

Adjacent to the museum is the Ukraina Park Recreation Area, a fully serviced campsite and recreation area. The park provides serviced camp stalls, shower facilities, public telephone, picnic shelter, large fire pit, and many other amenities

The hard work of Mundare’s volunteers led to the 2003 win in the National Communities in Bloom competition. During the Christmas season bus loads of visitors come to view the holiday and religious displays. Communities in Bloom and the Mundare Library sponsor the annual Christmas Parade and Christmas Craft Sale on the second Saturday in December. Mundare is also known for its famous Ukrainian sausage. Situated on Main Street is Stawnichy's Meat Processors, a family business that has prospered on processing fine foods.

Stawnichy's Meat Processing has earned the reputation of having some of the best Ukrainian sausage in Canada. This family business has prospered for over 45 years. Visitors can request a tour of the facility Tuesday through Thursday. The Stawnichy family set up a non-profit foundation that completed a 42 ft. high replica sausage and tourism rest area. The 6 ton sausage is the only one of its kind in the world and is literally sculpted into Mundare's town landscape overlooking Main Street.

Another exciting venture is Whitetail Crossing Championship Golf Course & Residential Development now open south of the Town.
